APD makes progress in recruiting 911 dispatchers, call-takers

Austin Police Department (APD) is addressing staffing shortages in its Emergency Communication (ECOMMS) center.

The shortages have led to slower response times to emergencies in recent years.

APD has been focused on filling vacant positions, including dispatcher and call-taker roles.

As of October 2022, 91% of dispatcher positions and 69% of call-taker positions have been filled.

APD has taken measures such as hiring new leadership and expanding recruiting efforts.

They have also improved technology infrastructure and launched a recruiting campaign.

APD will continue to explore innovative ways to invest in and develop the ECOMMS team.
